    PRESS RELEASE

PRESS STATEMENT

MARCH 18th, 2024

VISION SPRING INITIATIVES CONDEMNS THE KIDNAPPING OF SCHOOL CHILDREN FROM SCHOOL PREMISES.

Vision Spring Initiatives; a non-governmental, non-partisan and not-for-profit human rights organization dedicated to upholding the rights of women, girls and those made vulnerable by regressive laws and policies condemns the recent abduction of school children from their school premises in Kurija village in Kaduna’s Chikun district, Nigeria. This despicable and barbaric act is not only a flagrant violation of the basic human rights of every child, but also an assault on the principles of safety, security, and education.

The kidnapping of children from their school is a heinous and outrageous attack on the future of our society. Every child has the fundamental human right to access education safely and without fear of violence, exploitation or deprivation of their basic freedoms.  By kidnapping students, the perpetrators have put the lives of these learners at risk, robbing them the opportunity to grow, learn and reach their full potentials.

Vision Spring Initiatives condemns this act which is a gross violation of their rights to education, well-being and dignity. Holding young student’s hostage, endangering their wellbeing, and using them as bargaining chips is an act of cruelty that no child should ever have to endure. It betrays the core principles of human dignity that Vision Spring Initiatives exists to defend and promote for all children.

The organization stands in solidarity with the anguished parents and families affected by this harrowing situation, school authorities, staff and communities impacted by the action of the abductors.

We call on Nigerian authorities at all levels to use every legal and humanitarian means possible to secure the immediate release of these kidnapped students and bring the criminal perpetrators to justice. Attacks targeting educational institutions are an affront to the universal right to education that must be protected.

Protecting children’s safety, defending their rights, and enabling their healthy development is a responsibility we all share as a global community. Vision Spring Initiatives call upon all actors to join in condemning this act by raising their voices and taking actions to demand accountability and safety of children everywhere. Together, we must stand united against all forms of violence and injustice, particularly when it targets the most vulnerable members of our society.
